Bonao Information
With impressive mountains and landscapes, Bonao in the Dominican's central region is the capital of the province of Monsenor Nouel. Banao has become a mandatory stop for those who want to revitalize their minds and raise their spirits. Thanks to its location near the Central Cordillera mountain range, this hidden paradise offers a unique, Alps-type climate - but in the Caribbean - making it the perfect spot for nature lovers.
It is difficult to resist the charm of a welcoming village that is surrounded by streams of water and bathed by waterfalls. Bonao offers tranquility, hospitable people and a wide variety of activities such as swimming, horseback riding, and rock climbing.
When you're there, be sure to visit the Candido Bido Cultural Center. It has beautiful murals that highlight the center's façade that were painted by one of the Dominican Republic's best-known painters. There is also Cristian Tiburcio's house-museum, where the artist has transformed all its spaces into works of art - walls, stairways, windows, bathrooms, beds and even the kitchen cabinets. Entering at the La Ceiba crossing, you arrive at the Jima River falls, popular among the locals. The Dominican Republic Ministry of Environment has recently upgraded a trail that makes it possible for visitors to enjoy three of the nine falls in this scientific preserve, known as The Fogs.
Each winter during Dominican Carnival season, Bonao's Carnival features unique characters from each part of the country. They celebrate by parading to the beat of the carnival groups on Sundays all throughout February. Banao carnival characters include the Santos de Palo, wooden representations of Catholic saints made by the artists who are grouped according to their saints.
Although you might not believe it, one of the country's most famous restaurants is also in Bonao: the Tipico Bonao. Hands down, it is the best restaurant in the area for traditional Dominican food. If you are traveling on the Duarte highway, don't forget to make a mandatory stop to have lunch at the Tipico Bonao. You won't be regret it.
