Croatia's currency is the Kuna (HRK). The currency is fairly weak but relatively stable fluctuating between 5 HRK - 5.5 KRK to 1 USD. Coins have values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Lipa and 1, 2, 5 and 25 Kuna. A Kuna is worth 100 Lipa. Notes have values of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Kuna.
In tourist areas you will find that a lot of items can be paid for in Euro i.e. accommodation, travel and some restaurants.
Prior to travel Kuna can be obtained in the UK at some foreign exchange stores, or you can order Kuna online for pickup at the airport. Once in Croatia foreign currency can easily be exchanged at a bank or one of the "Bureaux de change" offices, avoid exchanging at a hotel as the exchange rate they give is usually quite poor. If you are brining money into the country, amounts of 5000 Euro or greater must be reported to customs upon entering.
ATM's are readily available at resorts, banks, supermarkets and airports and provide a choice of navigation language. All major credit cards are accepted in Croatia.
Croatia applies a VAT (value added tax) of 23% as a standard and 10% on some tourist items. Larger purchases can have this tax refunded after leaving the country if the appropriate paperwork is obtained from the place of purchase.
