See all locations in Jasper National ParkOne of the world's great glacial lakes Maligne Lake is surrounded by the towering Canadian Rockies and covered in dense green forests that transform into a blanket of white in winter. The lake is about 60 minutes drive from the township of Jasper and there are shuttle services available. There's a licensed cafeteria open during the summer months and motorboats and rowboats are also available for hire to enjoy some great fishing.
Spectacular Spirit Island is 14 kilometres (9 miles) toward the south end of the lake and there is no road or trail access. Tour boats or private, non-motorized watercraft are the only means of reaching Spirit Island.
The clean, bracing waters range in colour from a deep cobalt blue to magnificent aquamarine and there is a 45km (28 mile) narrated cruise that explores all reaches of the lake which takes approximately 90 minutes. Alternatively hire a canoe and explore the lake in your own time. At Spirit Island, the boat lands to allow for a short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the mountain ringed southern shores of Maligne Lake.
