Edmonton Information

Canada's Festival City

Edmonton hosts more than 30 festivals throughout the year that celebrate music, visual arts, dance, performing arts, sports and film. Throughout the summer festivals are held for blues, bluegrass, folk, jazz and symphonic music. Winter festivals focus on ice sculptures, skiing and skating. In-between, there's something for everyone from the Canadian Finals Rodeo to the Freewill Shakespeare Festival - and five distinct arts festivals that focus on art design, storytelling and film. A couple of highlights include the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival in July and the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival in August.

It’s always a good time to visit Edmonton, where you can enjoy yourself in a surprising number of ways. See a major sporting event or one of our famous festivals. Take the family to a museum or gallery. Or play in the fresh air on over 160 kilometres of nature trails. Sample one of our fabulous restaurants. Then let us entertain you — whether your tastes run to jazz or heavy metal, improv or Shakespeare, Edmonton has something going on for you tonight. And remember to save some time for bargain hunting: Edmonton is world-renowned for its shopping.

Edmonton’s downtown is a thriving arts, retail, business, and government centre. There are over 500 places to shop, and over 200 restaurants. Getting around is easy via 17-kilometer pedway system (above and below street level covered walkways) which connect major shopping centres and key public buildings. Downtown landmarks include City Hall, an eight-storey glass pyramid; the award-winning Canada Place, with its copper-coloured façade; the historic Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, built in 1915; and the Shaw Conference Centre which offers spectacular views of Edmonton’s river valley.
