Phnom Penh Information

Not a destination for the faint of heart, Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia and the country’s economic, political, and industrial centre. Travellers from developed countries can find Phnom Penh a challenging destination –it is dirty, noisy and poor, with pickpockets and wild traffic thrown in. But for those prepared to tackle the culture shock, it’s known to be a rewarding and memorable experience.

Phnom Penh has a grim and turbulent history, and was the seat of power for French Colonialists in the late 19th century before the country was granted independence in the 1950s. It was later flooded with refugees from the Vietnam War, and then captured by the notorious Khmer Rouge. Many of the city’s occupants suffered forced labour and genocide under the brutal regime. Phnom Penh has since undergone significant reform and development, but remains an eye-opening experience.

History is on display at a number of museums and memorials around the city. This includes The National Museum of Cambodia, The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (formerly the S-21 prison), and the Choeung Ek Memorial (also known as the ‘Killing Fields’). All provide striking insight into the remarkable and often confronting history of Cambodia.

Phnom Penh also offers visitors a range of Asian and French style restaurants, as well as an increasingly vibrant nightlife, colourful markets, and the atmosphere of a bustling, developing city. Food, shopping, and travel are generally very cheap, but quality can be questionable and caution is recommended.

Travelling around Phnom Penh is easy, but can be dangerous –particularly on foot. One of the biggest risks for tourists and locals alike is being hit by a motorcycle, and the highest caution is urged for those wishing to cross the roads. Taxis are reasonably priced, but fares should be negotiated in advance. Tuk Tuks and Rickshaws are a cheaper option, but are exposed to the open traffic. More adventurous travellers can hire a motorcycle or take a motorcycle-taxi, but will need to brave the chaotic roads.
