Brussels Information

Belgium's Capital, Brussels, has grown from a tenth century fortress town into a modern bustling city with over a million people calling it home. In the recent decades Brussels has hosted many landmark European institutions such as NATO and the European Union (EU) and now has a deserved reputation of being the unofficial capital of Europe.

For visitors, Brussels is a reasonably compact city with the majority of it best attractions all within walking distance of the city centre. Highlights include the the beautiful city tower called Grand Place-Grote Markt that looks especially amazing at night. The Arc de Triomphe-Triomfboog  offers panoramic views of the city is well worth the time to visit whilst the Atomium is a striking 100 metre recreation of the atomic structure that was built for Expo 58. The top sphere contains a restaurant where visitors can get enjoy a nice meal with a view over Brussels. 

There are numerous museums and art galleries that attract visitors that are interested in the culture and history of Europe and the world. The Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire has an extensive collection of rare artifacts from many civilisations whilst the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique, has a stunning collection of both modern and ancient artworks. Famous artists featured include, Matisse, Van Gogh, Dali, Hiëronymus Bosch and Magritte.

Brussels has a wide range of restaurants, bars and nightclubs that are well worth visiting. There is an active music scene and band venues and dates can easily be found in the English printed papers. The food, chocolate and beer in Brussels is held in high regard with the specialities including mussels, fries and Belgian waffles.

Brussels is considered to be a very safe city to visit though there are some organised pick-pockets in the tourist areas and some of the more out of the way areas are best avoided at night. Brussels has two major airports and and is well serviced by train and bus systems making it a simple city to get to and explore.
