Bridgetown is both the commercial centre and the capital of Barbados with about 80 000 in it's population. The original name was "Indian Bridge" for the crude Indian built bridge which once spanned the Careenage River. Sometime later it became known as the Town of St. Michael, before being re-named Bridgetown, the name that remains today.
In times past the river was an important centre for trade between the islands in the area, but these days the river is mostly used for pleasure craft.
in the town itself, Broad Street is the main street thoroughfare and consists mainly of department stores, banks and duty-free outlests. There are plenty of other shopping opportunities in town as well as restaurants and banking facilities, money exchanges and the like.
