Kuta is the lively centre for tourism in Bali. Nestled on the peninsula adjacent to Jimbaran, Kuta attracts visitors from around the globe who come for the warm waters and long beaches. A Kuta Holiday is easy to organise, as there is a huge collection of resorts and hotels centred around the area - including backpackers, luxury resorts and everything in between.
Surrounding the accommodation areas is a huge array of market stalls, selling everything from fresh food to locally made wood carvings, leather goods and t-shirts.
The town was originally a small fishing village but was discovered and developed as Bali's first tourism region and has never looked back. Kuta has spread to join with it's northern neighbor, the town of Legian. Legian has become a haven for expats, those who come to Bali and cannot bear to leave.
Kuta has recently encountered tragedy when terrorists targets the area in 2002, and again in 2005 resulting in the deaths of more than 200 people. These events had a devastating effect on the local communities due to the drop in tourism, but in recent years Bali has regained it's reputation as an idyllic holiday destination and the ever positive spirit of the locals is again winning over tourists in their thousands.
