Grand Bahama Island Information

From beautiful beaches and unspoilt pine forests to sleepy villages and catamaran cruises at sunset: you can experience it all on Grand Bahama Island. The sensational holiday hotspot of Freeport and Lucaya boasts wide tree-lined boulevards, elegant resorts, world-class shopping, superb beaches and a multitude of activities for everyone.

A true paradise for sports enthusiasts, golf courses and tennis courts abound on this 96-mile island in the Gulf Stream. If you have a taste for adventure, take a dive with the sharks or the dolphins. For nature lovers, Grand Bahama Island is every bit as exciting, filled with natural wonders that make it a fascinating place to explore.

If you head out on your own, be sure to take in the miles of exquisite beaches - including the spectacular Gold Rock Beach - which line the southern shore. And take time to visit some of the colourful smaller towns, or settlements, too: from West End and Eight Mile Rock to High Rock and McLean's Town, it's easy to imagine you're on one of our secluded Out Islands when you pass the wood-framed buildings lining the roadside.

Grand Bahama Island is a truly unique destination. It allows visitors to combine a cosmopolitan holiday at a world-class resort with the charm of historic fishing villages and undiscovered ecological treasures. It has one of the world's largest underwater cave systems, three national parks, endless beaches, emerald-green water and enchanting marine life. Ultra-modern conveniences and Out Island warmth: it's all right here waiting for you.

History:

It's hard to believe, but the momentum of today's thriving industries on Grand Bahama Island only really began in the 1950s, when the cities of Freeport and Lucaya were developed. For the centuries that stretch back to the time of the earliest settlers, like so many other islands in the Bahamas chain, the local people, culture, and economy were destined to ebb and flow with whatever - and who ever - drifted in with the tide.
