Gloucester National Park Information

Signposted from the main street, the Gloucester Tree is Pemberton's most famous tourist attraction, situated in the Gloucester National Park. It is one of Western Australia's renowned karri trees, the tallest tree species in the State and third tallest in the world. The karri can grow up to 90 metres over a period of about 100 years.

In the past, foresters maintained a regular fire lookout from the Gloucester Tree's lofty crown. Today, visitors are invited to climb to the cabin in its upper branches for sensational views of the surrounding forest (a certificate to commemorate your feat can be obtained from the Tourist Centre).

There are several well signposted and interpreted walk trails of varying lengths starting from the area of the tree. These include the award-winning Bibbulmun Track, Western Australia's premier 1000 kilometre walk trail from Perth Hills to Albany (for more information visit: www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au or telephone 08 9481 0551).

A walking and bird-spotting package is available from the tourist centre entitled 'On the Trail of the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo' containing suggested Bibbulmun Track day walks (including the Gloucester Tree area), information on this striking & endangered bird, a colour postcard and red-tail sighting card.

There is also a ten kilometre loop walk from the Gloucester Tree , which passes the Lavender and Berry Farm after about six kilometres, providing a great refreshment stop!

The Gloucester Tree also features in the recently launched 'Forest Discovery Wheel' available from the Pemberton Tourist Centre. The wheel is a fun, easy guide to eighteen of Western Australia's best known forest trees and plants. Proceeds from the sale of the wheel support Western Everlasting, a major government flora conservation initiative.

The Gloucester Tree was named after the Duke of Gloucester who visited in 1946. For more information visit: www.calm.wa.gov.au/national_parks/previous_parks_month/gloucester.html
