Alcaston Gallery

Based in Melbourne but exhibiting regularly in other states and internationally, Alcaston Gallery has been operating since 1989 and specialises in the exhibition of Australian Indigenous artists.

Alcaston Gallery was one of the first Australian galleries to focus on Indigenous art. The Gallery has consistently encouraged audiences to view this art within the context of contemporary art and the global art market.

Alcaston Gallery is a contemporary Australian art gallery dedicated to the promotion of work by living artists through an extensive exhibition program and series of open education forums. Director Beverly Knight is the current Victorian and Tasmanian President of the Australian Commercial Gallery Association (ACGA).

Alcaston Gallery has been instrumental in facilitating the transition of Aboriginal art from a fledgling art movement to an integral component of the Australian contemporary art market.

The works are often highly abstracted interpretations of the artists country or landscape, dreaming or ceremonial body painting designs. The works are in themselves highly contemporary however they take on a much deeper meaning when viewed within their cultural context.
