The AFL Masters National Carnival is conducted over eight days and is the major national event for players. First held in Melbourne in 1983, the Carnival has since been rotated annually around Australian major city locations and has steadily grown to become the largest Australian Rules Football Championship.

The 2009 National Carnival will be held at Cazaly Stadium and other selected grounds in Cairns and will attract in excess of 36 teams with over 800 players. The teams are from all states, in age categories of over 35, over 40, over 45, over 50 and over 55.
