Sorell Information

Sorell is a town on the Tasman Highway, 26kms east of Hobart . These days it is mainly a service centre for the local farming community as well as being a major weekend retreat for Hobart residents.

Sorell was named after the Governor of Van Diemens Land in 1821. From its inception to the late 1800's Sorell was a major centre for grain producers, so big that at times it even exported to NSW. These days the region produces lambs, as well as dairy and mixed farming.

In November a bushranger festival commemorates the town's history when the notorious bushranger Matthew Brady held up the town managing to lock up the soldiers and free the prisoners.

Historic buildings include 3 national estate listed churches, the original barracks, the police commissioner's residence and two inns, The Bluebell and The Plough and Harrow.
