Tamar Island Information

Tamar Island is only 10 minutes drive from Launceston. It is the centre of the Tamar Island Wetlands which is part of the Greater Tamar River Conservation area which covers 60 hectares of the Tamar estuary. Some of the area is reclaimed agricultural land which was drained in the early part of the twentieth century. There were also attempts to dredge the channel and increase flow into the estuary by sinking barges and ships – some of which can still be seen today. It is an important habitat for many species of birds and reptiles including the threatened green and gold frog and the poorly reserved Coastal Paperbark. It is also under threat from many introduced species.

Tamar Island covers 7 hectares and rises to 20 metres above sea level giving excellent views over the estuary. It is reached by a 1.5 km long boardwalk across the estuary and is home to an interpretation centre and a further 1.2 km of track.
