Derby Information

Derby is situated in north eastern Tasmania, 103 kms east of Launceston on the Raingarooma river. It is a good stop off point on the way to the east coast attracting many tourists to its Tin Mine Centre. This is a recreated mining village, celebrating the town’s heritage, complete with main street, mining equipment and a large sluice.

It is a classified historic town and was established in 1874 with the discovery of tin. The Brother’s Mine was established in 1876 and tin was extracted up to 1948. There was a huge disaster at the mine in 1929 when the Briese’s Dam crumbled after 3 days of torrential rain when an 18 metre wall of metre swept into the town killing 14 people.
