West Coast Wilderness Railway Information
Tasmania’s West Coast Wilderness Railway operates between Strahan and Queenstown. It is one of the world’s best railway journeys.
The 34 kilometre journey follows the route of the trains that once carried pure copper from the rich mines in Queenstown to the port at Strahan. The line, with its high trestle bridges, unique Abt rack-and-pinion section on the 1:16 inclines and steep grades through a rainforested river gorge, has been faithfully reconstructed to echo the amazing engineering feats of the pioneers who built the railway more than 100 years ago.
The original steam locomotives and coaches are used on the journey. Stops for refreshment and sightseeing are made at some of the original stations of the past – Lower Landing, Dubbil Barril, Rinadeena – where knowledgeable local guides introduce you to the rich heritage of the railway.
Lunch and morning and afternoon teas are available on the train and at the station coffee shop in Queenstown. In the Premier Carriage, guests enjoy excellent cabin service with fine cool-climate wines, fresh local pastries and Tasmanian cheeses. The West Coast Wilderness Railway departs daily from Queenstown and Strahan. Passengers can choose to make the trip back on the train or return by coach shuttle.
