Penola Information

Penola combines cultural heritage with historic charm, yet also remains highly progressive thanks to an eclectic mix of cafes, galleries and boutique-style shops.

Call into the John Riddoch Centre; incorporating the Local History Display and Research Room, Interactive Hydrocarbon Centre and the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize Gallery. It also houses the Fully Accredited Visitor Information Centre with a range of free maps and brochures. While there, be sure to collect your 'Walk with History' brochure and discover the historical sights, intriguing past and secrets of Penola.

Take a Walk with History in Penola, the ideal way to visit the historic and heritage sites within the town. Beginning at the John Riddoch Centre, this walk takes in the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre and School House, Petticoat Lane, historic buildings, cottages and churches. Then journey onto the Victorian Mansion, Yallum Park, one of the best preserved homes in the country.

Artists, winemakers, and other creative types fondly call this town home, but Penola is perhaps best known for its former residents. Poets John Shaw Neilson, Adam Lindsay Gordon and will Ogilvie gained endless inspiration here, along with Blessed Mary MacKillop, who co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph with Father Julian tension Woods.

Immerse yourself in natural beauty and unwind at one of the many Parks or Gardens in the area. The Penola Conservation Park, Greenrise Recreational Park, Penola War Memorial Park and the Coonawarra Centenary Sculpture Park are popular spots for BBQ's, walks and picnics.
