Mount Gambier Information

Mount Gambier is the second biggest city in South Australia after Adelaide. The 'blue lake city' earned its nick name by being situated on the edge of a giant crater, which is now filled with pure artesian drinking water. Changing colour with the changing seasons, the name 'blue lake' was born.

Mount Gambier boasts the tag line "the best of the city in the heart of the country". The little city is located between some great country locations including the great ocean road, the Grampians and the Coorong.

The name Gambier comes from Lord James Gambier in 1800, it was given by Lieutenant James Grant whilst on a voyage in the Brig, HMS Lady Nelson.

The town's major industries are forestry, trucking and tourism.
