Sofala Information

Sofala is the oldest surviving gold town in Australia and is located in the Turon River Valley 45kms north of Bathurst. There are two streets of well preserved buildings from the height of the gold rush. It all began in 1851 when up to 10,000 people were living in a tent city which stretched for 16kms along the main street. The population almost immediately dropped down as more gold fields were discovered but by 1855 as the town went into decline there was an established infrastructure, much of which survives today.

There were several hotels, a post office, police and court buildings, churches, schools, banks and stores. Gold mining continued to a greater or lesser extent until 1948. There are some interesting attractions nearby including the Turon Technology Museum, the Chinese Settlement and other remnants of the gold rush era. There is good homestead style accommodation available in the village.
