There are number of islands right on the reef offering excellent snorkeling and diving, although only the best known, Heron Island, has varied permanent accommodation, with some accommodation also on Wilson Island. Other islands have camping facilities but in most cases require visitors to have permits and be totally self sufficient in water, food and equipment. Most of the islands are important bird rookeries and green sea turtle nesting sites and at the right times of year (October to March) turtles can be seen nesting and laying eggs. You might also get to see baby turtles hatching and making their way to the sea.
