See all locations in Central NSWOphir was the first place payable gold was discovered in Australia in 1851, when a couple of large nuggets and 113g of panned gold was taken to Sydney by Hargreaves. This sparked Australia's first gold rush ,which proved to be short lived and did not lead to the establishment of a town. The Ophir Reserve is today a picnic and camping area located 27 kms north east of Orange where Summer Hill and Lewis Ponds Creek converge. It is a tranquil place located in a gorge with excellent trout fishing. You can still fossick for gold, walk around the old workings and tunnels and see the site of the original find.
In the 1890's the focus of god mining moved to Doctor's Hill about 3 kms from the camping area. Gunnadoo Gold Mine continues to operate, producing the gold for the medals at the Sydney Olympics.
There are guided tours of the mine and it's surrounds and there is a souvenir shop where you can hire metal detectors.
