Northern Tasmania Information
Launceston, the centre of northern Tasmania, is situated at the head of the beautiful Tamar Valley. The city successfully blends a colourful history with scenery, creativity, adventure and entertainment. It is renowned for its fine food and great entertainment-sip a local wine or a James Boag Premium beer in one of the city's award-winning bistros and restaurants.
The region around Launceston is full of treasures. The Cataract Gorge Reserve reaches almost to the middle of the city of Launceston. Follow the riverbank boardwalk to the reserve, where the walkway clings to the spectacular cliffs. The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's most productive wine region. Vines grow on gently sloping hills and mellow autumn sunshine ripens the grapes, adding unique cool-climate complexities of flavour. Work your way down the riverbanks through a variety of reds and whites.
Visit the Swiss-style village of Grindelwald, 15 minutes north of Launceston, or pop into Deloraine, whose resident population of just about 2000 swells by 30,000 around November each year when the nation's largest working craft fair comes to town. The bridge, Bonney's Inn and the Baptist Tabernacle are just a handful of the historic landmarks that give this riverside town its charm.
