See all locations in Northern RiversThe Tweed region or Northern Rivers is a beautiful mix of largely unspoilt natural experiences, scarce in these days of widespread development. Take some time to explore the many historic towns and villages along the coast and among the hills of the hinterland, there are dozens to choose from and there are some great little eateries, craft shops and local galleries to keep you busy. Many will love taking long walks on the beaches, without the crowds so common elsewhere. Keep an eye out for dolphins or even whales at the right time of year, you may even find yourself eye to eye with while taking a swim.
The Northern Rivers region is centred around the Tweed Caldera, one of the world’s largest extinct volcano craters. At the centre of the rim of mountains that was once the base of the volcano, Mt Warning or Wollumbin (Cloud Catcher) as the local aboriginal community knows it, stands like a sentinel and is the first place in Australia to see the sun.
There are miles and miles of unspoiled beaches along the coastline and an incredible five world heritage National Parks in the area all abounding with native plants and animals and bio-diverse rainforest. The Tweed River flows languidly through the region as well and offers yet more options for the holiday maker, with great fishing and boating. Get off the beaten path and head to a camp ground high in the Border Ranges or stay in any one of an eclectic collection of forest retreats and cottages.
Whether you are into surfing and swimming , fishing or boating or just kicking back in a beautiful environment this region has plenty to offer.
