The Argyle Diamond mine in the Kimberley region of Western Australia has allowed one operator, Belray Diamond Tours, to conduct tours through the mines.

Visitors to the AUD430 million Argyle Mine don't have to put up with dust and scorching heat which is typical of many mines. Argyle treats its visitors as honoured guests.

The Argyle Diamond Mine tour begins with a ninety minute flight. The fly over includes Lake Argyle, the Ord Dam and the Bungle Bungles before touching down at the mine.

Visitors follow through the whole mining process which extracts more than thirty million carats of diamonds a year.

The recovery viewing room where rough diamonds are sorted and graded is the highlight of the tour. Visitors can see many millions of dollars of diamonds graded according to size and quality.

The Argyle Diamond pipe was discovered in the remote ragged ranges of the Kimberley in 1979. Mining of alluvial deposits began in 1983, and the main mine and treatment plant began operations in 1985.

Although only five per cent of the mine's production is gem quality, it has gained a worldwide reputation for its rare and valuable pink diamonds, as well as fine whites, champagnes and cognac coloured diamonds.
