The Darling River is the most famous of all the rivers in the outback. It starts at near Bourke in NSW where the Barwon and Culgoa rivers become one, although its origins can be traced up to the McIntyre Ranges near the Queensland Border. It joins the larger Murray River at Wentworth in Victoria, forming the longest continuous river system in Australia.
During the 19th Century paddle steamers plied the Darling River bringing necessities to the huge sheep stations through river ports such as Louth, Tilpa, Wilcannia and Menindee. In exchange they brought back wool for export to Europe. Many legends began along the Darling River from Henry Lawson to the beginning of the labour movement. A dirt track known as the River Road, runs for 750 kms from Bourke to Wentworth. Camping by the river, fishing and yabbying and visiting the river port pubs make this an unforgettable trip into Australian history.
