Sutton Forest is a small hamlet at an intersection on the Illawarra Highway near Moss Vale, 129 kms south west of Sydney. It is a collection of churches, cemeteries and historic commercial buildings now given over to craft and specialist gift shops. Very few people live in the village but on rural properties spreading out towards Moss Vale, Berrima and Exeter.
Large tracts of land were given out to settlers in the 1820's. At that time this was the outer limit of the colony of NSW. Governor Macquarie himself named a large area around the current village as Sutton Forest after the speaker of the House of Commons in 1820s. The early settlers cleared the original Sutton Forest and attempted to create an English Idyll with stunning gardens and deciduous trees. There are some magnificent estate houses built in the Georgian and Victorian styles. The most famous 'Hill view' was purchased in 1889 as a country retreat for the governor of NSW for 70 years. This is turn led to the development of other accommodation for the elite of Sydney. Today there are many bed and breakfast places and farm stays as well as manor houses.
