Exeter is a picturesque "English" style village in the Southern Highlands of NSW. It is a delightful country village with a village green, general store, country lanes and hedgerows and grand rows of deciduous trees. There are also some glorious "English" gardens as well as many antique shops and country retreat style accommodation. Nearby are Morton National Park and several vineyards as well as all the other attractions of the Southern Highlands
Exeter owes its existence to the coming of the railway in the 1860's and has a classic example of a historic timber railway station. It takes its name from the hometown of the area's first pioneer James Badgery, whose descendants owned most of the land surrounding the village. The village started to develop in 1889 because of the availability of rural subdivisions. Soon there was a store and a bakery, a public school and a School of Arts Building. However, no inn or hotel was built.
