Set in a tropical garden on the Darwin Harbour at Bullocky Point is the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT). The MAGNT collections place the region's art, history and culture in an Australian and international context through research, interpretation and collection development.
These collections encompass Aboriginal art and material culture, visual arts, craft, Southeast Asian and Oceanic art and maritime archaeology, Northern Territory history and natural sciences. The MAGNT complex consists of five major permanent galleries, a touring gallery, educational facilities for school groups, a theatre, the Museum Shop and the Cornucopia Museum Cafe.
A prominent event on the MAGNT exhibition program is the annual Telstra presents the National Aboriginal Art Award and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Established in 1984 by the MAGNT specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Straight artists, the Award sponsored by Telstra attracts entries from the NT and Interstate and is renowned for presenting diversity and innovation in contemporary Aboriginal art.
The MAGNT also presents a yearly exhibition program and tours exhibitions with the NT, nationally and internationally. This comprehensive program is developed incorporating touring exhibitions from other museums and art galleries as well as MAGNT initiated exhibitions which from time to time feature Territory artists. There is a permanent gallery devoted to the tragic events Cyclone Tracey as well as numerous other displays.
