Mungo National Park Information

Mungo National Park is situated in the NSW outback, 110kms from Mildura and 316kms from Broken Hill. It is the centre of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area and covers 240,000 hectares of semi- arid ancient lakebed. Mungo Man was discovered here in 1974 and is only one small example of the evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area dating back almost 50,000 years when the lakes were full of fresh water. Fossils, fireplaces and middens abound around the shores of the lakes. Three local tribal groups are actively involved in management and offer guided tours in and around the park.

From the 1850's the area was occupied by pastoralists who ran sheep in leading to the rapid destablisation of the soil particularly after the introduction of the rabbit. There are several examples of those times you can visit today including the Mungo Wool shed and the Zanci homestead.

The most spectacular natural feature is known as the 'Walls of China', a 33 kilometre long crescent formed by the erosion of sand and clay as it blew off the lake bed.
