Mount Macedon is the mountain which gives its name to the range which it belongs to. The mountain is actually an extinct volcano which rises 1010 metres above sea level. The town of Mount Macedon itself is rich in English heritage. Visitors can see historical buildings, extravagant houses and magnificent gardens. Wildlife sanctuaries, native plants and waterfalls can also be found.

Stone grindings in the area indicate that the location was definitely inhabited by Aboriginal ancestors long before white settlers arrived. It was Thomas Mitchell, who in 1836 reached the summit of the mountain and sighted Port Phillip. He named it after Phillip Macedon.
