Inverawe Native Gardens Information
Inverawe Native Gardens, just 15 minutes south of Hobart, is a nine and a half hectare Australian Native Garden, located north of Margate on the Channel Highway. Inverawe is a four year old garden which includes a large landscaped garden, open forest and lightly timbered parklands. Inverawe is designed to be at peace with the environment and to do all the things a good garden should - inspire, relax, stimulate, recreate and above all, delight and intrigue.
More than 4,000 plants have been carefully selected for minimum water requirements, minimum maintenance and minimum use of chemicals. Displays in season include hundreds of Grevilleas, Callistemon, Correas and Acacias. Hundreds of eucalyptus have been planted in the parklands to supplement the mature trees on the property. The garden abounds in birds, with seasonal visits from Wedge-tail eagles,Sea eagles and Swamp harriers. Seventy bird species have been spotted and are on the Inverawe bird list, including all 12 Tasmanian endemics.
It is home to various honey eaters, parrots and little fellows like robins and wrens. The rare and endangered Swift parrots and Forty-spotted pardelotes are sometimes seen. Adjacent wetlands are patrolled by Droughty Point and Bruny Island.
You can stroll at leisure along an extensive network of paths, enjoy a short nature walk or simply sit back and take in the view. Informative signs and named plants point out local highlights and touch on Channel history.
