Five Islands Nature Reserve Information
Five Islands Nature Reserve is located near Port Kembla off the NSW south coast. It covers 24 hectares and was created in 1960 to provide protection for the sea birds who come to the islands to breed. 24 species of birds congregate there, several of which are endangered and considered to be of international significance. The Nature Reserve is also home to the Australian fur seal, also threatened with extinction.
The islands have been seriously degraded through grazing and the spread of weeds such as kikuyu grass, however in recent times there has been a focus on rehabilitating the area through the replanting of original plant species. The islands are also important culturally to the local aboriginal population.
