The beauty of this location comes through the raw bush land and the iconic great plains which make the Australian Outback. Cooper Creek is the life force which runs through all of it.
Cooper is a very important element to the region. The area receives very little rainfall throughout the year, therefore the running creek supplies a significant amount of water to the people and their land.
Aboriginal history of Cooper Creek describes the watercourse as a significant trade route between the indigenous peoples. The water and wildlife in the area allowed the Aboriginal people to live in the surrounds for thousands of years. Meetings between explorers such as Captain Sturt and Aboriginal people have also been recorded.
It was Sturt who gave the name Cooper. The name came from Sir Charles Cooper who was a prominent South Australian judge and later chief justice. The term creek may seem confusing to the expanse of water which exists at times now, however when Sturt found it the water levels were very low.
