Built on a honeycomb of mines, Bendigo in central Victoria is lined with impressive nineteenth-century 'boom town' architecture. From 1870 to 1880, Bendigo was considered the richest and largest goldfields site in the world. Today, you can discover the city's golden heritage at the restored Central Deborah Mine.
Visitors can pull on a hard hat and head below the city for a fascinating tour of the mine. If you're game, you can take a ride on CageRider, a miner's cage that plunges 30 storeys underground before shooting up for a bird's eye view of the city. Above ground, there's a self-guided surface tour, an interactive museum and vintage trams that travel Bendigo's streets and provide a recorded commentary of the city's history and architecture.
