See all locations in Katherine and SurroundsThe Buchanan Highway runs for 401 unsealed kilometres west from Dunmarra on the Stuart Highway to the Victoria Highway near Timber Creek. It crosses the Buntine Highway at Top Springs where you'll find a road house and a motel. There is fuel and grog available here but little in the way or provisions. The highway will also take you through part of the Gregory national Park.
The road is normally in good condition and a pleasant run through heavily timbered mulga country although a 4 wheel dive vehicle (and at least one good spare tyre) is highly recommended if not mandatory. The causeway at Victoria River can cause some difficulties as can some local wash outs. The river itself looks very inviting, but don't even think of swimming; it's full of saltwater crocodiles.
The Jasper Gorge area has a permanent water hole and is a good place to camp.
As a 4 wheel drive adventure and camping route, the Buchanan highway rates highly.
