The Leonora Golden Gift weekend is held in Leonora, located 230 kilmetres from the largest regional centre, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and has been running since 2003. The Golden Gift weekend is an initiative of the Shire of Leonora and is primarily an athletic carnival, incorporating Australia’s richest 1600 metre foot race, the 'Elite Mile'.
The athletic carnival is supported by a free community concert, horse racing carnival, fireworks, children’s entertainment, market stalls and other street performances.
The Leonora Golden Gift attracts athletes from all over Australia, with local, state, national and international runners congregating in Leonora to participate in the event.
The purpose of the event is to provide communities of the Northern Goldfields with an opportunity to be a spectator in a National Athletic event, whilst providing visitors to the region with a experience in the Australian outback.
The event provides an entertaining family weekend for all ages and cultural backgrounds.
