The railway station at Alice Springs was built in 1988 based on a 1930 design for a station that was never built. The train did not actually reach Alice Springs until 1929 when the rail link from Oodnadatta was completed. Before then it took 3 weeks to make the journey via wagon or camel.
The Ghan is named after the Afghani camel traders who used to transport goods into the centre before the railway. There is a sculpture of a camel in the foyer of the station commemorating those camel trains. The old railway station in Railway terrace has some interesting historical buildings around including 3 old railway cottages built for employees in 1929. The new station is in George Crescent.
