Transport Options

There are no airports in Antarctica capable of accepting ordinary commercial airliners. Air travel is normally by military aircraft carrying cargo and landing at Williams Field.

During the summer several boat companies offer excursions to Antarctica. When travelling by boat smaller ships can get closer to Antarctica’s nature and wildlife more so than the larger ships however these are more prone to rough seas. Cruise operators generally allow 100 people on land at any one time in order to comply with IAATO agreements so therefore on a large passenger boat the chances are you will only have a couple of hours a day off ship. Generally the smaller ships will try to ensure 2 different locations per day around the continent although this is dependent on the weather.

There are also charter sailboats offering voyages to Antarctica. Most offer expedition style trips where guests actually help out on board although usually no prior sailing experience is required. Compared to the popular cruise ships, small yachts can be significantly less comfortable and be a lot more work. However this experience does offer freedom and flexibility and generally a very rewarding experience.

To get around Antarctica there are sledges and dogs, ponies, skis, tractors, snow cats and aircraft including ski planes and helicopters. Cruise ships use zodiac boats to ferry tourists from ship to shore in small groups and come fully prepared with landing transport, food, fuel and sometimes even cold weather gear. You cannot purchase food or fuel in Antarctica.
